Sabudana Khichdi

Sabudana Khichdi is a popular upvaas/fasting dish prepared in Western India region. In Mumbai, you’ll find this dish in most of the restaurants or fast food stalls/eateries. This dish is prepared using Sabudana, Potatoes and Peanuts. It goes well with sweet curd or lassi. You can also prepare this dish for breakfast or evening snacks.

Preparation Time
 – 15 mins

Soak Sabudana – 1 hour 30 mins

Cook Time – 15 mins

Total Time – 2 hours

Ingredients:

  • 500gm Sabudana (Sago)
  • 2 medium size potatoes
  • 2 small bowl roasted and coarsely crushed Peanut
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 4-5 finely chopped Green Chillies
  • ½ small bowl Peanut (soak the peanut in water )
  • 6-7 Curry leaves
  • Rock salt (Sendha Namak) to taste
  • 1/2 small bowl oil or ghee

Serves:  3-5 persons

Directions / Procedure :

  1. Take sabudana in big deep bowl. Wash the sabudana in water about 2-3 times. Then soak the sabudana in water for about one and half hours. Sabudana becomes soft after soaking.
  2. Soak the peanut in water for about 4-5 hours.
  3. After 4-5 hours boiled the soaked peanut and keep aisde.
  4. Simultaneously, wash the potatoes and peal the skin. Then cut the potatoes in any shape but very thin. Keep aside in water.
  5. Heat the oil in kadai or pan on low flame gas & add cumin seed, fry the cumin till they crakles , then add curry leaves and green chillies, saute for 1 minutes.
  6. Add finely chopped potatoes and add salt to taste. Stir the mixture well. Cover with lid and cook for about 7-8 mins on low flame gas. Stir the mixture once in between while cooking.
  7. Add coarsely crushed roasted peanuts and boiled peanut in it, mix it well, saute the mixture for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Now add the soaked sabudana and salt to taste in it. Mix all the ingredients very well.
  9. Keep the flame low and cover the kadai with lid for about 5 mintues. If sabudaan cook well then it looks like translucent.
  10. Garnish with finely chopped coriander and serve hot with normal curd/ sweet curd/lassi.

Ready to serve during your fasting day.

Tips & suggestions

  • While washing don’t rub the sabudana.
  • Add more chopped green chillies if you like more spicy
  • Do not add water for cooking
  • Cut the potatoes very thin because they cook easily
  • If you like coconut, then add desiccated coconut (optional)
  • If you like coarsely crushed roasted peanuts, then add in it (optional)
  • Adding boiled peanuts is optional
