Today is Narali Poornima festival which is celebrated in Konkan, the coastal region of Maharashtra. This festival falls on a full moon day of the month of Shraavan. It’s a beginning of new fishing season and fishermen offers coconut to sea-god before sailing out.

Narali Vadi  is a special sweet dish prepared to celebrate this day. It is prepared using mixture of scraped coconut, milk and sugar. This dish is also known as Narali Pak or Naralachi Khape. You can easily prepare this dish as all three ingredients are generally available at home. Here it goes…

Preparation Time –  10 Mins

Cook Time – 35 mins

Total Time – 45 mins

Ingredients:

  • 3 bowl scraped fresh coconut
  • 3 bowl Sugar
  • 5 green cardamom powder
  • 1 small bowl milk
  • 2 teaspoon ghee
  • 3-5 drops food colour – Lemon yellow (Optional)
  • ½ small bowl crushed dry fruits (optional)

Serves:  7 persons (2/3 for each person)

Directions /Procedure :

  1. Heat kadai or non-stick deep pan on low flame and add 1 teaspoon ghee.
  1. Then add scraped coconut, sugar and milk. Stir the above mixture very well. Cook the above mixture on low flame.
  1. Now sugar start melting, here in between stirring is must because the mixture is stick immediately to the base of pan.
  1. Cook this mixture till it dry and mixture become thick.
  2. Add cardamom powder and mix it very well. Also add dry fruits if you like.
  3. Simultaneously, take dish and grease the ghee very well.
  4. While stirring note that, the mixture should be very sticky.
  5. Transfer this hot mixture immediately in above plate and spread it evenly by using rice serving spoon OR flatten the mixture by using hand, if you can bear the heat of hot mixture.
  6. After cooling down the mixture, cut it into small pieces in any shape you like.
  7. After some time, take the small pieces out from the plate.

Now, the Narali Vadis are ready to serve.

Tips / suggestions:

  • Instead of sugar use grated jaggery – 2 ½ bowl.
  • Instead of normal milk use only cream milk/milk malai .
  • Spread the hot mixture in plate evenly.
  • If you like colourful sweet dish then add food colour – lemon yellow.
  • While spreading always use spatula or rice serving spoon.
