Upvasacha Varicha Bhat

Top post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers

Upvasacha Varicha Bhat is made from Vari also known as Bhagar. It’s a popular fasting dish in Maharashtra. In North India, it is known as Sama Ke Chawal or Vrat Ke Chawal. Some people prepare it plain. I like to prepare it with boiled peanuts. It is very easy and quick to prepare fasting dish. And it goes well with coconut green chilli chutney or plain curd.  As it is a quick dish to prepare, you can prepare it for breakfast as well.

  • Finely Chopped Coriander leaves
  • 6-7 Curry leaves
  • 4-5 teaspoon oil or 3 teaspoon Ghee
  • Salt to taste (Sendha Namak / Rock Salt)

Directions / Procedure:

  1. Soak the peanuts in water for about 4-5 hours.
  2. After 4-5 hours boiled the soaked peanuts and keep aside.
  3. Wash the vari rice, drain the water completely and keep aside.
  4. Simultaneously, wash the potatoes and peal the skin. Then cut the potatoes in any shape but very thin. Keep aside in water.
  5. Heat the oil in Kadai or pan on low flame gas & add cumin seed, curry leaves and green chillies, saute for 2 minutes.
  6. Add finely chopped potatoes and add salt to taste. Stir the mixture well. Cover with lid and cook for about 7-8 mins on low flame gas. Stir the mixture once in between while cooking.
  7. Now add vari and boiled peanut, mix it well, saute the mixture for 2-3 minutes.
  8. Add two and half bowl water. Cook it on a low flame for about 5 minutes.
  9. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and serve it hot.

Tips / suggestions:

  • Add extra water for cooking, if you like soft bhat.
  • Cut the potatoes very thin because they cook easily.
  • If you like coarsely crushed roasted peanuts, then add in it (optional).

Addition of soaked peanuts is something new to me. Will try it tomorrow, Shravani Somvar. I love Bhagar with “danya chi aamati”. Thanks for sharing Varsha.
